Warm Up Activities

Informational Process

Write a topic sentence for each of the following:

  1. Write a topic sentence for each of the following and list the steps:
    • how the president is elected
    • how a fuel pump works
    • how a telephone works
    • how a bird builds a nest 
    • how does your coffeemaker work 
    • how a bill becomes a law 
    • how a breadmaker works 
    • how an electric toothbrush operates 
    • how some other machine/instrument works
  2. List in chronological order the steps that occur during one of these processes. 
  3. Next, write up a short paragraph instructing the reader how it occurs or how it works.

Reread the example essay for the informational process. Note the thesis, the steps, and the transitions.


Directional Process

  1. Write a topic sentence for each of the following and list the steps:
    • how to properly brush your teeth
    • how to make a good cup of coffee
    • how to make a delicious omelet
  2. List in chronological order the steps for one of these that you need to follow to accomplish the task. 
  3. Next, write up a short paragraph instructing the reader how to do it.
  4. List the steps that you follow for a certain ritual activity, such as getting ready for work, or for a date, or for getting the children ready for day-care, or for getting ready for bed, or a job interview, etc. Write a paragraph giving directions for this ritual activity.
