Description Writing Assignment

  1. Describe your favorite vacation spot. Your purpose is to convince others that it is ideal. 
  2. Which is your favorite season of the year? Explain your choice with description of the season. 
  3. Which is your favorite holiday? Explain your choice with description of holiday. 
  4. Choose a room which you associate with a particular person and describe it in detail. Your purpose is to reveal something about the room's occupant. In essence, illustrate the person with description of the room. 
  5. Choose a specific, large-scale event which you have attended such as a wedding, professional baseball game, or state fair. Describe the event in detail. Your purpose is to communicate your feelings for or during the event through the description. Avoid directly stating these feelings, i.e.: "I was miserable," or "I was excited." 
  6. Recall a particularly colorful teacher and describe him or her in detail. 
  7. Recall a particularly colorful relative and describe him or her in detail.

As you write

  • Use specific, concrete details. 
  • Choose precise, vivid verbs and adjectives. 
  • Refer to senses other than sight. 
  • Incorporate at least two examples of figurative language. 
  • Remember:  SHOW; don't tell!
