A) DEFINITION

· Interjections are used to show extreme emotion (great surprise, pleasure, or displeasure).

B) PUNCTUATION:

· If the INTERJECTION is not followed by a sentence, then place an exclamation point after it:

  •  Wow!   Ouch!   Drats!   Eureka!   Good Grief!   Alas!   Great Scott!

· If the INTERJECTION is followed by a sentence, then place a comma after it and place an exclamation point at the sentence’s end:

  • Wow, did you see that!          Eureka, I have found the solution!

· The interjection O is never followed by punctuation; however, Oh is always followed by punctuation.

  • O God in heaven!                     Oh, I got an A on my test.
