A. DEFINITION:  Interjections show strong emotion.

  • Interjections are used to show extreme emotion

    • great surprise

    • great pleasure

    • great displeasure

  • If the INTERJECTION is not followed by a sentence

    • then place an exclamation point after it:

      • Wow!

      • Ouch!

      • Drats!

      • Eureka!

      • Good Grief!

      • Alas!

      • Great Scott!

  • If the INTERJECTION is followed by a sentence

    • then place a comma after it

    • AND

    • place an exclamation point at the sentence’s end:

      • Wow, did you see that!

      • Eureka, I have found the solution!

  • The interjection O is never followed by punctuation;

    • however, Oh is always followed by punctuation.

      • O God in heaven!

      • Oh, I got an A on my test.
