Three theories on Origin of Life
  • Abiogenesis
  • Cosmozoic
  • Supreme being
3
Abiogenesis
  • The abiogenesis theory indicates that life has come from preexisting non-life.
4
Abiogenesis
  • Biogenesis is the belief that  life comes from preexisting life.
    • By placing an a before the word you negate the meaning in many cases.

5
Abiogenesis
    • For example sexual reproduction involves the combination of the sperm with the ovum and results with a combined offspring with characteristics of both parents. By placing an a in front of sexual reproduction you negate that and thus means no combination of genes in the offspring.
    • Asexual reproduction is when the offspring is the same as the parent. Binary fission or budding are examples.

6
Abiogenesis
  • Another term for abiogenesis is spontaneous generation.
  • The continuation of the changes in life forms to a more complex arrangement would be referred to as evolution.
  • Evolution is changes made throughout time. For example the changing of life on the so called phylogenetic scale.

7
Abiogenesis
  • The phylogenetic scale is a listing of organisms from the simple to the more complex. For example man is on top of the phylogenetic scale and blue green algae is found at the bottom. All of the organisms in between have evolved to a complex form beginning with the blue green algae.

8
Abiogenesis (phylogenetic scale)
  • Blue green algae, amoeba, hydra, flatworms, round worms, segmented worms, fish, ape and on top man.

9
Hierarchy of Man
  • Man
  • Ape
  • Fish
  • Segmented worms
  • Round worms
  • Flatworms
  • Hydra
  • Amoeba
  • Blue- green algae

10
Evolution
  • This is a continuation of abiogenesis but first before evolution you have to have a life form. Abiogenesis started life from non life, example the Big Bang Theory.
11
Abiogenesis (Big bang theory)
  • The Big Bang Theory is the dominant scientific theory about the origin of the universe. According to the big bang, the universe was created sometime between 10 billion and 20 billion years ago from a cosmic explosion that hurled matter and in all directions.
12
Abiogenesis ( Big Bang)
  • History of Theories on the Origin of Life
  • Spontaneous Generation via Abiogenesis - Widely accepted well into the 19th century.
  • Pasteur- believer in Biogenesis.
  • Pasteur and Tyndall did controlled experiments to disprove theories of spontaneous generation with present day atmosphere.
  • Kelvin- spontaneous generation impossible under any conditions
  • Haeckel, later Oparin suggested that abiogenesis could have taken place under different atmospheric conditions.
  • Oparin, Haldane. Primary abiogenesis. Life originated under reducing conditions.
  • Today, atmosphere is strongly oxidizing. Organic compounds less stable.
  • Today, organic compounds suitable as precursors of life would be devoured by some existing life form.
  • Stanley Miller (1960s) experimentally modelled the processes hypothesized by Oparin.

  • -Hydrogen, methane, ammonia, and water sealed together in a sterile beaker.
  • - Water evaporated, condensed to simulate rain.
  • - Electrical sparks introduced to simulate lightning.
  • After several days, organic compounds began to form, including many amino acids.
  • With Hydrogen Cyanide added, production of nitrogenous bases (precursors of nucleic acids) occurred.
  • Condensation and Polymerization:
  • Polymerization involves assembly of monomer subunits into chains.
  • Various cyanic compounds produce dipeptides through condensation reactions involving hydrolysis.
  • ADP, ATP major sources of metabolic energy in cells, can be formed by reactions between hydroxyapatite and cyanic acid.
  • Stability and concentration of polymers:
  • Proteinoids can be formed through the dry heating of amino acids. Some have enzymatic activities.
  • Certain substrates, such as layered clays, promote the formation of polypeptides.
  • Membraneous droplets (Vesicles) form through the agitation of aqueous liquids with organic films on top.
  • Properties of Vesicles:
  • 1. Selective permeability of compounds entering or exiting vesicle.
  • 2. Permit concentration of organic compounds inside, increasing the probability of particular

Cosmozoic Theory
  • http://www.rael.org/
  •  The origin of life on Earth is one of the most intriguing scientific puzzles. Researchers are divided into two camps. One group believes that life was created de novo on earth (in clay or in the ocean). The other group suspects that life came from outer space, though not ready-made in the form of aliens but as molecular building blocks of organic matter.
Or was a lower form of life dropped off.

14
Chariots of the Gods
  • Erich Von Daniken's book Chariots of the Gods has been made into a TV documentary called In Search of Ancient Astronauts and gave him instant fame. It was narrated by Rod Sterling who had a very dramatizing voice and got many people interested.
  • Von Daniken has now written Odyssey of the Gods.
15
Cosmozoic (tangential)
  • Maybe just maybe we are rejects. Perhaps we are retarded individuals from another planet that had said get those low lifes off our planet and send them to Earth. As we try to approach them by radio signals they say let the retards down there just disregard their pleas to speak to us.
16
Supreme being theory
(possible theories)
  • God created life.
    • Possibly as the bible states created Adam and Eve.
    • God created lower form of life and we evolved into who we are.
  • Budda created us.
