Writing is not just the act of putting words on paper. It is the process of planning your words, composing a first draft, revising your content, and editing your words and sentences to achieve a coherent essay.

Writing is also a cycle. This means that you may go through each of the steps in the process several times, not just once. In revising your content, you may find you need to go back to planning and change your ideas about what your audience needs to know. You may decide to brainstorm some more on certain parts of your essay that are a little weak. You may end up writing not just one but two, three, or even more drafts before you get to your final version.

Some people say that writing is a never-ending process. But being a good writer also means knowing when your writing has achieved its goals and when it is ready for your audience – and not just because the due date for your paper has arrived!

In this section you will look at each step in the writing process and explore strategies appropriate to each step that can improve your writing.
