Course Description:
Principles of rhetoric, grammar and usage; the development of
vocabulary and extensive use of selected materials are stressed as fundamentals in the
writing of themes as well as extended papers. Students will be required to take a writing
competency exam as part of this course.
Course Goals:
This course provides students the opportunity to:
- create a written document using writing as process methods
- recognize and use such methods of development as narration, narration,
description, illustration, process analysis, classification/division,
definition, and comparison/contrast
- employ proofreading techniques to produce papers which conform to
standard English grammar, punctuation and spelling
- be able to use the major facilities, services and tools of the
college library

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be

produce clear, effective and interesting writing |

 | revise a multiparagraph essay to include correct mechanical usage |

Assessment and Grading
The following are acceptable assessment methods for this
course:
- within the first week of class, students provide a writing sample
to assess appropriate placement within ENG 101. (Use scoring rubric provided by the
department.)
- minimum 6-revised/edited multi paragraph papers utilizing 6
different rhetorical methods for a minimum of 3000-4000 total word count excluding journal
writing, immediate response questions, group activities, etc.

- Writing Competency Exam (required of all students see
attachments)

Other Course Requirements:
 | This rubric will be used to grade the Writing Competency Exam and
its use is encouraged throughout the class. |
 | The WCE will be evaluated by one reader, an instructor in the
English Department other than the students own. |
 | Instead of the standard lecture/demonstration approach, the
course delivery for microcomp. is via computer lessons and student papers are prepared
using a word-processing program. Lab fee is required. |
