A definition is a statement of the meaning or significance of a particular word or phrase. Since definitions are usually abstract, general or vague, this assignment involves providing concrete examples to explain the meaning of a word. In this paper, start with the dictionary definition of a common word such as love, freedom or family and discuss your idea of what the word means to you. You may also clarify, expand or challenge the accepted definition of a word through the use of stories, facts, statistics, etc. If you choose to clarify the meaning of a word, you simply support the definition with examples from your own life and experiences. If you decide to expand the definition of a term, then you basically say that the dictionary definition is more or less accurate but doesn't quite go far enough. For example, while families usually consist of blood relatives, you may know of other definitions of families, such as non-traditional ones, families in which grandparents raise the children, etc. Finally, when you challenge the definition of a word, you want to illustrate that the dictionary definition is inadequate. You must then create a new definition and back it up with examples. Make sure your paper has a thesis. In this case, your thesis statement is your definition. The rest of your paper should contain information that supports your definition. Usually, you provide examples, but you might also create a narrative or a series of smaller stories.
