A narrative is a story of personal experience that includes a moment of insight or a conclusion about human nature. Unlike descriptions, narratives are arranged in chronological order. Like any story, it has a beginning, middle and end. This type of writing often deals with moments of conflict or change in one's life. However, narratives can also deal with journeys.

Narrative Assignment:

  1. A time you took a test that conferred new status on you (driver's exam, SATs, etc.)
  2. A time when your assumptions were challenged
  3. A period of crisis
  4. An example of how you failed to fulfill someone's expectations (or they failed to live up to yours)
  5. Facing your fears
  6. Experiencing rejection
  7. A time you made a sacrifice for someone else
  8. A time you acted irresponsibly
  9. An experience of defeat or loss
  10. A time you lived out a fantasy
