Directional Process Analysis

Directional process analysis is useful for explaining a topic to the reader. The purpose for explaining such a process needs to be stated in a thesis that should indicate why the process is important, why it occurs or occurred, and why it should be completed.

It seems simple, but do not be fooled since the writer must approach the task carefully, understanding that the reader may be unfamiliar with what you are explaining.

Therefore, the process writer needs to be clear, concrete, and specific. You, oftentimes, may rely on other methods of development. Among these methods is narration; after all, a process is a story. Others include description, illustration, or comparison and contrast. Like narratives, the process essay is organized in chronological (time) order. However, rather than simply telling what happens, the process essay also explains how something should be done or accomplished.

The Directional Process Essay

Directional Process topics can range from 'how to make lasagna,' to 'how to overcome shyness,' or 'how to clean you bathroom in ten minutes."

In the beginning, the writer needs to inform the reader of any materials or equipment needed. Likewise, the writer is responsible for providing any warnings or hazards.

One important reminder when writing a directional process essay is to use transitions between the steps. Likewise, use transitions with the steps to indicate any ones that need to be done simultaneously. Remember that you must avoid the 'recipe' mode, not just listing but presenting the steps in essay form.

Be as specific as possible when indicating measurements, sizes, amounts, etc.

When giving directions, use the command mode. For example do not say, 'You need to gather all of the materials first." Rather say, "Gather all of the necessary materials."

Example of a Simple Directional Process

The following paragraph exemplifies a directional process analysis:

Changing a flat tire is not a difficult task. Before you begin, check to make sure that the vehicle is not on an incline and that the emergency brake is on. Then, gather the following necessary items from the trunk of the car: spare tire, jack, lug wrench, and a block of wood. Next, place the block of wood under a tire to prevent the vehicle from moving should the emergency brake fail. After removing the hubcap, use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the hub of the flat tire. Do not remove the lug nuts at this time. Next place the jack in an appropriate position and jack up the vehicle to a point where the flat tire is free to rotate. Now, remove the lug nuts and the flat tire from the wheel. Then, place the spare tire on the wheel and screw the lug nuts on, but do not tighten them. Finally, slowly lower the car with the jack. Once the tire is grounded, tighten the lug nuts with the lug wrench and replace the hubcap. You can now remove the block of wood and return all the items used to change the flat to the trunk before driving away.

You should note that the body of this paragraph is a step by step explanation of how to change a flat tire. You should also recognize the use of transitional words (underlined) which allow the reader to understand when one step has ended and another step is about to begin. This directional process explains how to perform a task.

This is a very simple example of how you can write a directional process in a paragraph.  Follow the directional process example link at the top of this page for an example of an essay.
