Choose one of the following topics for a comparison and contrast essay. You will need to sufficiently narrow the topics into a thesis statement. 

  1. the celebration of weddings, parties, funerals, or some specific holiday in two different cultures
  2. two attitudes towards the same subject [immigration, television, education, welfare, etc.]
  3. life in the United States now and life in the United States in the year you were born
  4. writer's choice [subject to instructor's approval]

 

Begin by writing an outline, following these specifications:

bulletfollow the subject-by-subject or point-by-point method
bulletbegin with a clear thesis statement
bullethave at least four points for comparison and contrast
bulletinclude topic sentences for each paragraph
            

        Due Monday, December 10

Then, write an essay following these guidelines:

bullet

The introduction should comment on the significance of the topic and state the thesis clearly

bullet

Use point-by-point or subject-by-subject organization.

bullet

Each body paragraph should begin or end with a clear topic sentence.

bullet

At least four points should be compared or contrasted.

bullet

The comparison and contrast should be supported with facts, statistics, or expert opinions gathered from secondary sources [minimum two sources].

bullet

The final paragraph should include some conclusion you draw based on the discussion in the body paragraphs.

bullet

Use MLA citations when quoting or paraphrasing material form secondary sources

bullet

Include an MLA formatted Works Cited page.

Page length: 3 to 5 pages

Due Monday, December 17
