DEFINITION:

ASSIGNMENT

Definition Assignment

Definition explains the meaning of a word or phrase. An extended definition seeks to explain the essential nature of the idea encapsulated in the word being defined. Depending on the nature of the idea and the writer's purpose, an extended definition can be many words, paragraphs, or even chapters in length.

From one point of view, extended definition is merely one specific type of expository writing. The purpose of exposition, after all, is to explain; the purpose of extended definition is to explain the meaning of a word. Put the other way around, a definition is a particular type of explanation. Therefore, an extended definition will often use the same methods of development that are common to expository writing generally, methods such as details, examples, and illustrations.

Write a multi-paragraph definition that incorporates those methods of logical development which best clarify the meaning of the term being described. Do not hesitate to sharpen the reader's understanding of that term by also saying what it is not. As always, you may develop a subject of your own choosing instead of anything suggested below.

  1. cheating
  2. computer literacy
  3. a nerd
  4. pornography
  5. promiscuity
  6. common courtesy
  7. dirty politics
  8. a yuppie
  9. a California girl
  10. sportsmanship
