General Education Development (GED) Exam
ALTA Program adult learners are recommended to take the GED exam by the instructor after a standardized GED practice test scores has resulted in an average standard score of approximately 50.0. Documentation on an GED Test Recommendation form stating the name of the adult learner, address the recommendation letter should be sent to, the subtest scores, the average standard score, and the location of the test need to be received by the the Adult Secondary Education (ASE) coordinator (Kimberly Gavlick) two weeks in advance of the next scheduled GED exam. A letter of congratulations (see attachment) will then be sent to the recommended adult learners listing the testing dates, time, location, and what they must bring to the testing site. A letter listing the names of the recommended ALTA clients will be sent to Dr. Michael Koury, Chief GED Examiner, at the Wilkes-Barre Area School District.
Lackawanna College also administers the GED exam. Lackawanna College, at Hazleton and Scranton, gives the GED exam approximately once a month in each location, and clients can take the test at a fee of $8.00 a subtest. The GED Test Recommendation form must be completed by the instructor and sent to the ASE coordinator two weeks in advance of the next GED test.
The Wilkes-Barre Area School District has an information line for GED examinees pertaining to GED exam dates, registration, and what examinees must bring to the testing situation. If a student is requesting to take the GED exam without instructional sessions and without a recommendation from the instructor, you may refer him/her to the Wilkes-Barre Area School District's GED exam informational line phone number which is 826-7294.
An adult learner may take the GED test up to 3 times in one year, and there is no minimum amount of wait time
required between the tests. The test can be taken again as soon as another one is offered.
Special accommodations must be made for adult learners who want to take the actual GED exam before their 18th birthday.
Additional and very useful information for the adult learner and the instructor can be found on the internet at the ABLE Site.
