Fraction Fact Sheet Group Activity
By
Kimberly Gavlick

Objectives:

Learners will be able to create a Fact Sheet about fractions, which they can use as a review.
Learners will be able to work cooperatively with others to solve a common goal.
Learners will be able to add subtract, multiply, and divide fractions.

Level: ABE/ASE

Materials: notebooks, pen/pencil

Activity directions:

Pre-Instruction: Cooperative Learning roles and fractions in general need to be taught to the class. This activity is a review activity which would allow the learners to create a tool they can easily reference at a later date.

Procedures:

1. Divide class into 4 groups with about 3-4 in each group (if there are more than 16 students then have 2 groups doing the same thing).

2. Each group will be responsible for an operation (multiply, divide, subtraction or addition)

3. Explain directions: The groups will complete a Fraction Fact Sheet (see attached). Each group will have a Leader to read the directions and guide the others in the group, a recorder, someone with good handwriting, to write down what the group wants to record, an encourager/time keeper to watch the clock and give encouragement, and everyone must be a researcher to find the facts and offer suggestions.

4. The teams will work together to collect information about their operation as it relates to fractions. On the fact sheet they should list the steps for solving the problems, and give 3 examples, one will be a word problem and the other two will be number problems.

5. Groups exchange with each other. The groups will review the other teams fact sheet. They should look for missing steps or incorrect information, and they should solve the problems before handing it back to the original team.

Evaluation: The teams will turn in their fact sheets to the instructor to review. A copy will be typed for each student to use as their reference tool.
